Porting your business numbers to Google Voice: what to expect

Prepare carrier records, check number portability, design call routing and plan a safer cutover to Google Voice.

Check number portability first

Confirm each business number is eligible for Google Voice in the intended country and account. List direct lines, main numbers, fax lines, alarm systems and other services that depend on the current carrier. Do not assume every number or connected service can move.

Gather your carrier records

Collect a recent bill, account number, service address and any required transfer authorization or PIN. Submit sensitive carrier credentials only through the secure process agreed with your project contact, not the public inquiry form.

Design call routing

Document business hours, main greetings, auto attendants, ring groups and voicemail destinations. Check which features require Standard or Premier. Select supported desk phones and review emergency calling addresses and limitations with your administrator.

Plan the cutover

The carrier's acceptance, correct account records and the number types determine timing. Keep the old service active until the port completes and test calls in both directions. Agree who will handle issues and what temporary forwarding or fallback is possible.

After the move

Verify inbound calls, outbound caller identification, voicemail, ring groups and emergency location settings. Check messaging limitations for your use case. Only cancel the previous service after confirming that all required numbers and dependent services work.
